Miner's Delight: A BLM-Preserved Log Ghost Town Near South Pass

Miner's Delight grew out of Wyoming's 1868 gold discovery, one of the state's earliest communities and part of the South Pass rush that began in 1867. The Bureau of Land Management now preserves the townsite within the South Pass Historic Mining Area, a roughly 30-square-mile district near the Continental Divide that also holds the towns of South Pass City and Atlantic City.

What survives is unusually intact for a ghost town: about seventeen log structures, among them seven cabins along with a saloon, a meat house, a shop, a shaft house, and other outbuildings, all built of logs or unfinished lumber. A rugged walking path leads through the site from an interpretive kiosk at the entrance, with panels explaining the gold-mining history. There is no entrance fee, and the site is not ADA accessible.

For RV travelers, Miner's Delight is best reached via County Road 237 north from Atlantic City and then east onto the Fort Stambaugh Loop Road. It pairs naturally with nearby South Pass City State Historic Site and the BLM campgrounds in the area, making the South Pass district a rewarding multi-stop leg of a Wind River Country motorhome trip.
