Fourteen million visitors moved through Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge in 2023 per the Sevier County CVB annual report — more than any other Tennessee tourism corridor and more than the entire annual visitation of Yellowstone and Yosemite combined. That density is the central planning fact for any rig considering Sevier County: US-441 (the Newfound Gap Road into GSMNP from the north) carries 33,500 vehicles per day per NPS Spring 2023 traffic counts at the Sugarlands entrance, with summer-Saturday backups regularly running 90 minutes between the GSMNP boundary and downtown Gatlinburg. The 597-sq-mi county wraps the northern half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (the most-visited national park in the United States at 13.3M recreation visits in 2023 per NPS Visitor Use Statistics), Pigeon Forge (population 6,343, home of Dollywood — the second-largest theme park in the southeastern US by attendance after Walt Disney World), Gatlinburg (population 3,944, the only US town where the central business district is entirely surrounded by a national park boundary), and Sevierville (population 17,989, the county seat).

Cades Cove Loop Road inside GSMNP is the most-photographed 11-mile one-way scenic drive in the eastern national-park system; the loop closes to vehicles every Wednesday May through September for cycling-only access per the 2021 Vehicle-Free Cades Cove pilot program now made permanent. Cades Cove Campground accepts rigs up to 40 ft year-round on reservation through recreation.gov, with sites releasing 6 months ahead and June-October dates routinely selling out within minutes of release per NPS 2024 booking data. Elkmont Campground (40-ft rig cap) is the closest GSMNP option to Gatlinburg. Pigeon Forge Municipal Code §17.32 prohibits overnight RV street parking on US-441 (the Parkway) and on Wears Valley Road; the Pigeon Forge Premier RV Park and KOA Pigeon Forge handle commercial-park demand, with full-hookup pull-throughs accepting rigs to 45 ft. Synchronous-firefly viewing in late May / early June (Photinus carolinus) at Elkmont draws a lottery-only visitor pass through recreation.gov per the NPS Synchronous Firefly Event 2024 rules.
