Maine Governor Percival Baxter spent 32 years (1930-1962) personally purchasing 209,644 acres around Mt. Katahdin with his inherited fortune, then deeded the land to the state under a unique restrictive trust that prohibits commercial logging, paves no new road, bars motorized vehicle access to most of the interior, and caps RV length at 35 ft on any park campground in perpetuity per Baxter Trust deed language. The trust language is binding on the state and is enforced by the Baxter State Park Authority — separate from the Maine DACF state-parks system — making this the only US state park run under a private-foundation governance model rather than a state-agency model. Mount Katahdin at 5,269 ft is Maine's high point and the northern terminus of the 2,194-mile Appalachian Trail, with thru-hiker arrivals concentrated August through early October per ATC trail-register counts; the summit ridge holds the Knife Edge, a 1.1-mile exposed arête considered one of the most technical above-treeline scrambles on the entire AT.

Piscataquis County covers 3,961 sq mi — the fourth-largest county by area in the contiguous US east of the Mississippi — and wraps Moosehead Lake (75,000 acres surface, the largest single lake east of the Mississippi by surface area per USGS hydrography), the 100-Mile Wilderness section of the AT (the longest stretch of the entire trail with no road crossings, food resupply, or developed services), and the entire Baxter SP. Greenville (population 1,396, on Moosehead's south shore) is the only town in the county with full-service grocery and the only commercial seaplane base on Moosehead — Currier's Flying Service and Folsom's Air Service operate float-plane charters to backcountry sporting camps year-round. Dover-Foxcroft (population 4,213, the county seat 60 miles south of Moosehead) is the practical southern gateway for AT staging. Baxter SP campground reservations open January 15 each year and Roaring Brook (the trailhead for the most popular Katahdin approach via Chimney Pond) fills its summer inventory within minutes — practical strategy is multiple browser tabs at exactly 8am EST opening day.
