The county in brief
A traveler's read on Okanogan County
Okanogan is Washington's largest county by area (5,266 sq mi, larger than the entire state of Connecticut) and contains the only Washington county with a fully Canadian-border-spanning state-route (US-97 north through the Osoyoos border crossing into British Columbia). The county hugs the eastern flank of the North Cascades, with the WA-20 North Cascades Highway crossing Washington Pass at 5,477 ft — the highway closes by snowpack typically mid-November and reopens late April per WSDOT's annual Cascade Pass Closure Schedule (the 2023 closure ran November 21 to May 1, a 162-day shutdown). Winthrop (population 506) on the Methow Valley side of the North Cascades Highway holds an Old West frontier-town aesthetic preserved by a 1972 architectural-review ordinance (Winthrop Municipal Code Title 17.40) that requires all storefront facades to use weathered wood siding and hand-painted signage — the only Washington town with such a code.
The Methow Valley Sport Trails Association maintains 200 km of groomed cross-country ski trails, the longest single trail system in North America by groomed kilometers. Pearrygin Lake State Park accepts rigs to 40 ft with full hookups on 83 sites, with reservations opening 9 months out per Washington State Parks 2024 booking window. The 80% federal land ownership (Okanogan-Wenatchee NF, Colville NF, BLM, Lake Chelan NRA, and Pasayten Wilderness) supports extensive dispersed camping under a 14-day stay limit per Forest Order 06-19-22-01. The Pasayten Wilderness (530,031 acres) prohibits all motorized access per Wilderness Act §4(c). County ordinance Chapter 17.10 OCC prohibits overnight RV parking in unincorporated commercial right-of-way; the Tonasket and Omak Walmart locations have historically permitted self-contained overnight stays at the manager's discretion, but call ahead — corporate Walmart parking policy varies by store.
