April 12, 1861, at 4:30 a.m., Confederate Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard's batteries opened fire on the Federal garrison inside Fort Sumter — the opening shots of the American Civil War. Fort Sumter National Monument today is the only US National Monument that is accessible exclusively by ferry, with NPS-contracted Patriots Point boats running from Liberty Square at the Charleston peninsula and from Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant; there is no vehicle access whatsoever to the fort itself. Charleston County's 919 sq mi wrap the historic peninsula city of Charleston (population 150,277, the county seat and the largest city in South Carolina by 2020 Decennial Census), the Sea Islands (Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah, Seabrook, Wadmalaw, and Johns Island), and the Lowcountry tidal estuary system that drains 14,000+ acres of ACE Basin saltmarsh per SCDNR estuary maps. Charleston Municipal Code §27-72 prohibits overnight RV street parking citywide and enforces 2-hour metered limits in the historic district between the Battery and Calhoun Street — there is no scenario in which a rig can legally sleep on a Charleston peninsula street.

James Island County Park (Charleston County Parks & Recreation, fee per 2024 rate schedule) operates 124 full-hookup RV sites accepting rigs up to 50 ft, the only RV-friendly base within 15 minutes of historic downtown via the James Island Connector. Edisto Beach State Park 45 miles southwest accepts rigs to 40 ft with water-and-electric hookups, with reservations opening 13 months out through SC State Parks' reservation system. The 1989 Hurricane Hugo (Category 4 at landfall on Sullivan's Island, September 21, 1989) cleared 2 million acres of Lowcountry timber per US Forest Service damage assessment; the rebuild changed coastal building codes statewide and the post-Hugo elevation requirements still govern any RV-park redevelopment in the FEMA V-zones along Folly Beach and Isle of Palms. The Angel Oak on Johns Island (estimated 400-500 years old per Lowcountry Land Trust dendrochronology) is the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River accessible by passenger vehicle and is free to visit.
