From mid-February through late November, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles between Canyon Junction and the Temple of Sinawava — visitors ride the free shuttle system from the visitor center or Springdale shuttle stops.
The Mt Carmel Highway (UT-9 east through the Zion-Mt Carmel Tunnel) has the strictest vehicle dimension cap on any US national park road: 13'1" tall or 11'4" wide vehicles require a tunnel escort permit ($15, valid for two trips) and Zion suspends two-way traffic in the tunnel for the escort. Class A and 5th-wheel rigs almost always require the permit.
Springdale town ordinance (Springdale Town Code Title 6) prohibits oversize vehicle parking on State Route 9 (the main drag) and overnight street parking is banned outright. The closest serious campground is Watchman Campground inside Zion NP — 95 hookup sites that release on a rolling 6-month window at recreation.gov and fill within minutes during March-October peak. South Campground (also inside the park) is first-come, first-served. Outside the park, Zion River Resort (12 mi W in Virgin) and Zion Canyon Campground (in Springdale) are the standard commercial options. Plan tunnel escort timing into your route, base inside the park or in Springdale, and use shuttle for all canyon-floor exploration.
When to come
Best: Mid-September through October and April through mid-May: highs 75-88 F, manageable crowds, all park features open. Trade-off: Watchman fills 6 months ahead.
Skip: July through August: basin highs 100-105 F daily; flash flood risk in Narrows; peak crowds.
Your first hour in Springdale
Before you leave the lot
- Set a recreation.gov alarm 6 months ahead for Watchman Campground; sites fill within minutes for peak weeks.
- Top off propane at Hurricane AmeriGas before driving UT-9 east to Springdale.
Also worth doing
- Buy Zion Tunnel Escort Permit ($15) at any entrance station if rig is 13'1" tall or 11'4" wide.
- Fuel diesel at Maverik Hurricane before pushing into the canyon.
- Plan tunnel crossing for early morning or late evening to dodge mid-day escort backups.
- Park at visitor center or shuttle stop; ride free Zion shuttle for all canyon-floor destinations.
- Check NWS Salt Lake City flash flood watch before any Narrows or Subway slot canyon trip.
The mistake renters make
Driving a Class A or 5th-wheel from Zion east through the Mt Carmel Tunnel without purchasing the tunnel escort permit. NPS rangers at the West Entrance check vehicle dimensions; rigs over 13'1" or 11'4" are turned back at the tunnel and forced to reroute via UT-9 west to UT-17 north to UT-14 east to US-89 — a 4-hour detour vs the 30-min tunnel transit.
