Arriving in Grand Junction, CO with a rented RV
Grand Junction is the only Front Range alternative gateway to both Colorado National Monument and the Utah desert circuit, and the city sits in a rare microclimate where the Colorado River cuts through a 4,580-ft basin between the Book Cliffs and the Uncompahgre Plateau.

The Colorado NM has a published RV-size restriction: Rim Rock Drive has tunnels at the East and West entrances with clearances posted at 11 ft 4 in and 14 ft respectively, and the East Tunnel is the operational bottleneck — anything over 11 ft 4 in must enter via the West Entrance (Fruita) and reverse-route. Grand Junction Code §5.04 limits continuous on-street parking to 72 hours and prohibits human habitation of vehicles on public streets via §9.04.
Highline Lake State Park (12 mi northwest near Loma) is the closest serious campground with 30/50 amp full hookup loops, dump stations, and a lake suitable for kayaking and limited motorboat use. Wine country in Palisade (12 mi east) sees a September harvest surge that fills Junction West RV Park and Grand Junction KOA 60+ days ahead.
Plan dump and propane in town, time Colorado NM Rim Rock Drive for early morning to avoid afternoon heat (basin highs frequently hit 100 F in July), and never attempt the East Tunnel with any rig over 11 ft 4 in.

Your first hour in Grand Junction
Before you leave the lot
- Confirm campground reservation before driving in; Winefest and harvest weekends fill 60-90 days ahead.
- Top off propane at U-Haul (718 South Ave) or AmeriGas F Rd before any Colorado NM or Utah desert run.
Within the first hour
- Use Colorado NM West Entrance (Fruita) for any rig above 11 ft 4 in; East Tunnel has no turnaround.
- Plan Rim Rock Drive for sunrise to noon — basin heat builds 1-5 p.m. Jul-Aug.
Before bed
- Buy a Colorado NM 7-day pass ($25) or America the Beautiful pass at the West Entrance.
- Fuel diesel + DEF at Loves Fruita (I-70 exit 19) before pushing west to Utah Mighty 5.
Before departure
- Do not park overnight on Grand Junction city streets — §9.04 cites habitation regardless of duration.
The mistake renters make
Avoid this trap
Entering Colorado National Monument at the East (Grand Junction) Entrance in a Class A or 5th-wheel combination over 11 ft 4 in.
The East Tunnel has no turnaround. Stuck rigs must reverse out of the tunnel under NPS escort; tow recovery if jammed runs $1,500-$3,000 plus park closure to other vehicles.
