The Perimeter (I-285) is the operational boundary: nearly every legitimate RV park sits outside the Perimeter, with the closest serious option being Stone Mountain Park Campground (16 mi E, full hookup on 441 sites including the Yogi Bear lake-front section).
Sweetwater Creek State Park (15 mi W, near Lithia Springs) offers 10 hookup sites — the smallest GA State Park RV count in the metro. Atlanta South RV Resort (20 mi S in Hampton) and Atlanta Marietta RV Resort (24 mi NW) handle 75-ft rigs.
Atlanta sits at 1,050 ft on the Eastern Continental Divide and traffic congestion on I-285, I-75, and I-85 is the primary planning consideration — peak-hour delays on the Connector (downtown I-75/I-85 overlap) routinely add 60-90 minutes to a 10-mile transit. Avoid I-285 during 6:30-9:30 a.m. and 3:30-7:30 p.m. weekdays. Plan dump and propane at Marietta or Hampton, base outside the Perimeter, and use MARTA rail to reach downtown attractions.
When to come
Best: April through May and September through October: highs 70-85 F, low humidity. Trade-off: Dragon Con saturates Labor Day weekend.
Skip: July through August: highs 88-95 F + humidity; tornado risk in spring.

The mistake renters make
Trying to base out of a downtown Atlanta hotel parking garage in a Class A or large Class C — most downtown garages cap at 7'0" clearance and the Connector (I-75/I-85 overlap) has multiple 13'6" overpass clearances. Garage strike repairs to A/C unit and slide topper run $1,500-$5,000. Connector overpass strike triggers GDOT closure and CDL ticket equivalent ($300+) plus tow recovery $500-$1,500.
