The closest serious campground is Skidaway Island State Park (12 mi SE of downtown) with 87 hookup sites in maritime forest on the Skidaway Narrows — it sits at 10 ft elevation but the park's evacuation protocol routes vehicles to I-95 north or US-17 inland during named storms.
Fort McAllister State Historic Park (25 mi S near Richmond Hill) offers 65 hookup sites near the Ogeechee River. CreekFire Resort (13 mi W) is the closest commercial full-hookup option. Plan dump and propane in town, base out of Skidaway Island SP or Fort McAllister, confirm hurricane evacuation routing at check-in June-November, and use the Visitor Center shuttle to reach the historic squares.

Best: Mid-October through May 15: highs 65-78 F, low hurricane risk. Trade-off: St. Patrick's Day saturates March.
Skip: August through October: peak Atlantic hurricane window; humidity oppressive.

- Check NHC daily June-November; tropical systems can advance from the Atlantic within 4-7 days.
The mistake renters make
Trying to drive a Class C or Class A through Forsyth Park or the squares grid (Bay, Bull, Drayton, Abercorn) to reach a Historic District restaurant. Tight one-way streets, low-hanging Spanish moss (often below 11 ft), and the HDVR 20-ft cap mean tow recovery from a stuck rig in the squares grid runs $400-$900 plus citation. Visitor Center lot and shuttle is the only safe route.
