The ExxonMobil Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta sold out on-field RV reservations after the January 28, 2026 release, and Balloon Fiesta confirmed the standby list has been closed due to demand. Off-field rates at American RV Park, Enchanted Trails, and the Bernalillo KOA spike 2x to 4x normal during that window, and same-week walk-ins are effectively impossible.
Outside that window, Albuquerque is one of the more forgiving Western RV stops, but two local realities still catch arrivals out. First, city street parking is governed by Traffic Code Chapter 8, Article 5: any vehicle 90 inches or wider (most Class A and Class C rigs) is not permitted on the roadway, and overnight street parking is functionally banned for RVs through code-enforcement red-tagging that can lead to a tow.
Second, July through mid-September is monsoon season — afternoon thunderstorms drop flash-flood walls into dry washes around the Sandias, and the National Weather Service Albuquerque office explicitly states RVs are not safe shelter. Plan arrivals before 1 p.m. in those months. This guide cites the actual code sections, dump addresses, and reservation windows.

Best season to come
Late April through early June, and late September. Daytime highs 70-85F, overnight lows 45-60F, low humidity, monsoon storms have not yet started or have wound down. Sandia trails dry, Cibola NF roads passable.
Season to skip
Mid-July through mid-September (monsoon afternoon thunderstorms + flash-flood risk on dry washes; NWS-flagged unsafe for RV shelter) and the Oct 3-11 Balloon Fiesta window unless reserved months in advance.
Read before you park
Parking ordinances that bite RVs
RVs and any vehicle 90 inches or wider are not permitted on Albuquerque streets/roadway. Enforcement begins with a warning, then a citation, then a red-tag, after which APD may tow.

What this means for you: Most Class A motorhomes (~102" wide) and Class C (~96" wide) cannot legally park on any city street. Red-tag tow recoveries from APD-contracted lots commonly exceed $250 plus daily storage.
No vehicle may remain parked on a city street for more than 36 hours without being moved; 311 complaints trigger enforcement.

What this means for you: Even a tow vehicle parked at the curb while you stay with a friend will be tagged after 36 hours. Move it block-to-block or stage at a paid lot.
On private residential property, RVs/boats/boat trailers may be parked in side or rear yard only, and no portion may overhang the public sidewalk. Use as a dwelling is capped at 14 days; no permanent water/sewer/electric connection permitted and no cooking allowed inside.

What this means for you: Driveway visits with friends/family are legal short term but 'moochdocking' beyond 14 days is a code violation. Front-yard parking is prohibited.
Parking for the purpose of displaying a vehicle for sale, washing, greasing, repairing (except emergency), or selling goods from the vehicle on a street is prohibited.

The mistake renters make
Avoid this trap
Overnighting in a Walmart, big-box, or chain-store lot inside city limits assuming Albuquerque follows the standard 'RV-friendly Walmart' national pattern. Albuquerque PD and code enforcement actively patrol commercial lots near I-40 and Coors, and the 36-hour street rule combined with the 90-inch-wide vehicle prohibition gives officers wide latitude to tag any rig.
Red-tag, then APD-ordered tow to a contracted impound lot. Heavy-tow recovery for Class A/C motorhomes in Albuquerque runs $250-$450 plus $35-$60/day storage, plus the parking citation itself. Total exposure for a 2-night oversight: $400-$700.
