The state's signature
Top-of-the-lower-48 aurora odds
The northern border and honest badlands darkness give North Dakota some of the best aurora geometry in the lower 48 — when a storm tips the oval south, this is the state it reaches early. Storm-driven, never scheduled.
Seasonal RV-timing verdict
When North Dakota is at its best
North Dakota's prime RV window is May to September. Short but pleasant summer for prairie and badlands RVing; winters are long, cold, and windy with deep snow. Shoulder-season play: Late April and early October can work but many campgrounds close and frost or early snow is common.
Know before you go
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes occur in summer. Winter wind chills can be dangerous.
