About Sprinter
The Mercedes Sprinter is the gold standard of the #vanlife scene — high-roof models give 6'2" stand-up height, the 4-cylinder OM651 / OM654 diesel returns 18-22 mpg, and the AWD option (post-2014) opens forest-service-road access most converted vans skip. Conversions range from production builds (Winnebago Revel, Storyteller Overland) to one-off shops (Outside Van, Sportsmobile, Antero) to DIY.

Stand-up context
High-roof models: 6'2" interior stand-up. Standard roof: no stand-up.
Power system context
Typical conversion: 300-600W solar + 200-400 amp-hour lithium house battery. Inverter 2,000-3,000W to run microwave + induction cooktop. Diesel-fueled heat (Webasto / Espar) is standard — runs in winter without battery drain.
When Sprinter wins
Multi-week trips where reliability + diesel range matter. Cross-country drives over 2,000 miles. Boondocking trips with substantial solar needs. Off-grid winter trips (diesel heat is the only practical option for sub-freezing nights).
When Sprinter loses
Urban-only trips (Sprinter is too tall for many parking garages — 6'8" / 80" garage limits exclude high-roof). Trips under 5 days (premium daily rate doesn't pay off). Bike-rack-heavy trips (some Sprinter rear hitches are weight-limited).
What official guides don't tell you
PickRV — first-hand context.
AWD Sprinter (4WD with low-range transfer case) is rare in the rental market — adds about $40/day premium. Worth it for FSR access.
Mercedes uses AdBlue (DEF / diesel exhaust fluid) — about 1 gallon per 1,000 miles. Most rentals come with full tank; refills at any truck stop.
Sprinter parking garage clearance: standard roof fits 6'8" garages, high-roof fits 9'+. NEVER drive a high-roof Sprinter into a garage you haven't measured.
Cab heat + house heat are separate systems — Webasto runs the house, engine coolant runs the cab. Plan accordingly for sub-freezing morning starts.
Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) fault codes can disable the engine for emissions compliance — if a check engine light appears, do NOT ignore. Sprinter dealers + truck stops carry DEF.
Sprinter conversion fresh-water tanks are typically 25-40 gal — sufficient for 2 people for 5-7 days with conservative use.
