Why stealth parking matters
Most #vanlife travel is rural or wilderness-based. But cross-country trips inevitably include city stops — visiting friends, attending events, layovers between regions.
Hotels are expensive. Designated campgrounds are usually 30-60 minutes outside the urban core. Walmart parking lots (the classic free RV overnight) are restricted in many cities and not always safe.
Stealth parking — overnighting on a city street or in a tolerated lot — fills the gap. It works in some places. It does not work in others.
Cities where stealth parking generally works
Smaller cities in the Mountain West (Boise, Bozeman, Flagstaff, Bend) tend to tolerate van overnight if the van is parked in residential or commercial areas, looks like a normal vehicle, and doesn't return to the same spot repeatedly.
Coastal Pacific Northwest cities (Portland and Seattle) have areas of relative tolerance and areas of strict enforcement. Research the specific neighborhood.
Cities with high local #vanlife populations (Asheville, Bisbee, Joshua Tree town) are generally tolerant.

Cities where stealth parking is risky or illegal
Los Angeles: Section 56.15 of LAMC prohibits 'overnight habitation in vehicles' in many neighborhoods. Enforcement varies but is meaningful. The 2014 Desertrain v. Los Angeles decision struck down the prior overbroad ordinance, but the replacement is more targeted and still enforced.
San Francisco: similar ordinance, similar enforcement.
New York City: alternate-side parking rules + strict commercial vehicle restrictions make it impractical.
Boston: similar.
Denver: increasingly active enforcement in 2024-2026.
Many beach towns (Santa Monica, Pacific Beach SD, Venice Beach) have explicit anti-RV-overnight ordinances.
The Walmart parking lot question
Walmart corporate policy is to allow overnight RV parking 'when local ordinance permits and store management agrees.' In 2026 the practical reality: about 70% of US Walmart stores allow it, 30% prohibit it. The 'Allstays' app and 'CampendiumWalmart' filters show current status per store.
Always ask the store manager (or check posted signs). Park near the back of the lot, leave by 7-8 am, do not set up chairs or awnings.
Truck stops (Flying J, Love's, TA Petro, and similar chains) are reliably van-friendly overnight — and have showers + restrooms + diesel. Plan around them on long highway stretches.
What 'stealth' actually looks like
Cargo van conversion (no windows, work-vehicle aesthetic) — high stealth.
Stripped Sprinter / Transit with no graphics or branding — medium stealth.
Conversion van with awning + bike rack + 'PEACE' stickers — zero stealth.
Class B motorhome — zero stealth (clearly a recreational vehicle).
VW Westfalia — zero stealth (gathers a crowd).
