Alum Cave Trail to Mt LeConte

Alum Cave Trail is the shortest route to the Mt LeConte summit (6,593 ft, the Smokies' third-highest peak) — 5.5 miles each way, 2,800 vertical feet, and an honest very-strenuous rating despite the modest mileage. The trail passes through Arch Rock (a natural tunnel chimney), the Alum Cave Bluffs (a 75-ft overhang where Civil War-era saltpeter mining happened), and Inspiration Point before its final approach via cable-anchored ledges to the lodge complex. LeConte Lodge at the summit is the only North American lodge accessible only by foot — 12 cabins, no electricity, llama-trained supply trains, and a reservation calendar that opens October 1 of the prior year and sells out within 24 hours. The trailhead on US 441 between Gatlinburg and Newfound Gap holds 65 cars in a tight lot with no RV access. Elkmont Campground (35-ft cap, dry only) is the closest in-park RV staging, about 30 minutes east via the Sugarlands Visitor Center.
