About these eventsEach one in its own record's words.
Inkcarceration 2027. Inkcarceration returns to the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield on July 16 through 18, 2027, and every festival pass includes a tour of the famous prison building and entry to the Tattoo X show. The festival campground is not at the reformatory: it sits at the Richland County Fairgrounds about four miles away, linked to the festival by a free shuttle during festival hours. Camping passes cover four nights, indoor restrooms and showers, 24-hour security and medical help, a general store, and bands after the festival closes each night. Power and water are extras bought with the pass. RV sites run on 30- or 50-amp service with the pedestal up to 75 feet from the rig, adapters from a 50-amp rig to a 30-amp pedestal are not allowed, and water connections are shared, so the festival tells campers to bring a long hose and a splitter. Once a vehicle is checked in and parked, the festival generally does not let it leave the campground.
Ohio State Fair 2028. The Ohio State Fair is one of the largest state fairs in the United States, running about twelve days from late July into early August at the Ohio Expo Center just north of downtown Columbus — July 26 to August 6, 2028 by the historical pattern, with official dates set by the fair annually. It leans hard into its agricultural core: the butter cow display (an Ohio tradition of its own), enormous junior livestock competitions, and the natural resources area with its stocked fishing pond for kids, alongside midway rides and a grandstand concert slate. The Expo Center campus hosts RV camping during major events including the fair — check the fair's current camping reservation process — and Alum Creek State Park, 30 minutes north, offers one of Ohio's largest state-park campgrounds on a big swimmable reservoir as the alternative base. Late July is peak Midwest family-vacation season, so Columbus-market rigs book steadily; 8 weeks of lead is comfortable. The one-two of on-grounds convenience or lake camping makes this an easy anchor for an Ohio loop.
Circleville Pumpkin Show 2026. The Circleville Pumpkin Show, running since 1903, calls itself 'The Greatest Free Show on Earth' — four October days of prize-winning half-ton pumpkins, hog-and-pumpkin food, seven parades, rides and a legendary 400-plus-pound pumpkin pie, in the downtown of this small central-Ohio town (October 21-24, 2026, free admission). It's a quintessential Midwest harvest festival, and A.W. Marion State Park sits about 10 minutes east with a wooded RV campground on Hargus Lake — an easy fall-color base a short drive south of Columbus, with the festival's peak-autumn timing built in.
Circleville Pumpkin Show 2027. Circleville keeps its pumpkin show on a rule rather than a fresh announcement: the organizers hold it on the third Wednesday through Saturday of October, so the 2027 show runs Wednesday, October 20 through Saturday, October 23. The town's downtown becomes the fairground. Amusement rides stand in the streets, pumpkin pies and pumpkin donuts sell by the tray, the show stages parades, and it crowns its largest pumpkins, all with no admission charge. An RV trip here works best with the rig parked outside town. A.W. Marion State Park, an Ohio State Parks property near Circleville on the quiet water of Hargus Lake, runs a small, pet-friendly campground with electric and non-electric sites, flush restrooms and a camp store, and the show's park-and-ride shuttles handle the last miles downtown.
What this page covers
If you are planning a summer RV trip in this state, this page covers the summer-peak windows (June-August), the highest-demand destinations + festivals, the national-park reservation timing (open 6 months ahead via Recreation.gov), the heat-index advisories for desert + southern states, and when to book to secure your dates.
Ohio's summer peak window is Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, with the July 4 weekend at its center. Many National Park Service campgrounds release their sites on Recreation.gov on a rolling window months ahead; heat-index advisories matter for southern states.
The window. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend is the peak window (late May to early September). National parks + popular state parks see the heaviest demand, and the July 4 weekend books first.
What guidebooks leave out6 things to know before you book.
- July 4 weekend books first — reserve popular destinations months ahead
- Heat-index advisories: desert + southern states (AZ, NV, NM, TX) see 100°F+ daily highs — generator + AC capacity matters
- National park reservations open 6 months ahead via Recreation.gov at 10am ET — set alarms for the opening minute
- Wildfire-season disclosure: western states (CA, OR, WA, CO, MT, AZ, NM) may issue evacuation orders during summer — monitor InciWeb
- Festival circuit timing: Coachella (April), Bonnaroo (June), Lollapalooza (Aug), Burning Man (Aug-Sep) — book early per circuit
- Drive-day length: plan shorter driving days with kids aboard than an adult-pace itinerary would allow

Asked about summer RV trips in Ohio
When should I book a summer RV trip in Ohio?
Book the campground first: set the Recreation.gov and state-park alerts for it, then book the rig once the site is confirmed.
What category of rig works best for a summer RV trip in Ohio?
The dated entries on this page list RVs first most often; each event's page names the rig it suits and why.
What will the final price include?
The nightly rate you see is the rig's complete price. Before you pay, checkout itemizes every line openly — the transparent service fee, any host-set cleaning fee and any tax — with no surprises. See /pricing for the full fee breakdown.
What insurance applies when renting an RV for a summer trip in Ohio?
PickRV is not the insurer and does not sell or offer coverage. Renters arrange their own coverage; hosts may carry their own commercial policy. Confirm your personal auto or RV policy covers rentals — and your summer route and intended use — before pickup.
Can I cancel a summer booking in Ohio?
Yes — every booking carries the platform cancellation floor: cancel at least 48 hours before pickup for a full refund of the rental charges. Hosts can offer more generous terms than the floor, never stricter. Where local government issues an evacuation order or trip-disabling notice (e.g. hurricane, wildfire), the booking may qualify for a review on a case-by-case basis.
