Montana RV seasonal calendar

Montana's RV season is a mountain summer — late June through September, when Going-to-the-Sun Road finally opens and the high country comes alive. September may be the finest month of all; winter is long, cold, and for experts.

1. January· off-season cautionHigh-plains deep winter — cold, dry, sometimes bitter. Highs near 35°F, lows near 16°F.

   RV trip: May opens Montana's front door but not its high passes — plan lower-elevation loops and enjoy having them mostly to yourself.

   RV trip: June rewards patient plans: the country is at its greenest, and Glacier's alpine road often opens fully near month's end — check status before promising it to your crew.

   RV trip: This is Montana's headline month — everything alpine is finally open, so expect company at Glacier and reserve camps well ahead.

   RV trip: August keeps the whole state open — the one wildcard is wildfire smoke, so hold plans loosely and check air quality as you go.

9. SeptemberGolden, crisp, and quieter. Highs near 72°F, lows near 42°F.

   RV trip: September may be Montana's finest hour — summer access holds early in the month while crowds, bugs, and heat all fade.
