Renting an RV in Galena: what to know before pickup
Galena has its own arrival logistics. Palace Campground handles both the first night and the dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
Main Street from Meeker to Spring is the whole of historic Galena, and after sunset the allowance drops to 30 minutes. Park outside the corridor and walk in — and note the thresholds are conjunctive in the code text…
Galena Code of Ordinances Chapter 79, Schedule IV (Truck Parking Limited)
Dump stations & water
- Palace Campground — $10, potable water
Camp the first night
- Palace Campground · 1 mi out · Full hookups on 95 sites
Skip the classic mistake
Driving anything over 21 ft up Bench Street to the historic district
Best window: Mid-September through October and May through June — bluff-country fall color or spring…
The Galena window to avoid
January through February — Mississippi River freeze patterns and steep historic-street ice.
What that mistake costs
Switchback grades and tight turns trap rigs; sheriff response required to back out
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at Galena Hardware Propane, 301 N Main St, Galena, IL 61036, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Palace Campground — Galena Code Sec. 78-31 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Great River Road (Illinois portion) (some seasonal closures).
