The Upper Falls of the Tahquamenon River — 200 feet across and 50 feet high — discharge up to 50,000 gallons per second during spring snowmelt, making this the second-largest waterfall east of the Mississippi by volume after Niagara. Tannic acid leached from the cedar swamps upstream stains the water root-beer brown. The 50,000-acre park holds four campgrounds (Lower Falls Camp Loop 1 and 2, Hemlock, Rivermouth) with 300+ sites combined, electric hookups at a 45-ft cap, year-round operation though winter sites cluster at Lower Falls. Dump station at each major loop. Reservations open 6 months ahead via Michigan DNR. The Upper Falls overlook and the boat-and-walk circuit between Lower Falls Lower and Upper viewing platforms are the marquee attractions. Black bear and gray wolf presence is documented year-round.
