Mexican-American + Chicano history
Engaging the heritage
Cesar Chavez led the UFW from the 1960s through the 1980s, organizing migrant farmworkers (predominantly Mexican-American and Filipino) into a movement that won basic labor rights for agricultural workers previously excluded from federal labor law.
The broader Mexican-American + Chicano civil rights history includes the Chicano Movement of the 1960s-1970s, the East LA Walkouts, the Brown Berets, and the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Heritage sites span California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.
South Texas has the densest concentration of Mexican-American historical sites — the San Antonio missions (NPS), the Cesar Chavez NM (CA), and various interpretive sites across the Southwest.
