Cesar E. Chavez National Monument is in Keene, California (Tehachapi area), about 30 miles south of Bakersfield. The site is the UFW headquarters at La Paz. NPS manages it. Open year-round. Mexican-American + Chicano history
Engaging the heritage
Cesar Chavez led the UFW from the 1960s through the 1980s, organizing migrant farmworkers (predominantly Mexican-American and Filipino) into a movement that won basic labor rights for agricultural workers previously excluded from federal labor law.
The broader Mexican-American + Chicano civil rights history includes the Chicano Movement of the 1960s-1970s, the East LA Walkouts, the Brown Berets, and the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). Heritage sites span California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico.
