The Federal Highway Administration design standard for interstate clearance is 16 feet (with 14 feet minimum for federal-aid highways). The de facto US RV reality is that any vehicle taller than 13 feet 6 inches encounters posted-low-clearance routes frequently. State-by-state variation is significant. What is the lowest clearance I should plan for in a US RV?
13 feet 6 inches is the de facto RV planning standard. Most rental motorhomes are designed at or under this limit. Many vintage trucks-converted-to-RV are taller. Some Class A diesel motorhomes are taller (up to 13'10"). Verify your rig's height including AC units and roof racks. Compare against state-specific clearance lists below before committing to a route. The FHWA recommendation is to add 6 inches of safety margin to your measured height when planning.

Why US clearance varies so dramatically
The Interstate Highway System was designed to a 16-foot clearance standard (later reduced to 14 feet in some jurisdictions). The standard was set with future commercial-vehicle and military needs in mind. Federal-aid highways below interstate class were built to 14-foot minimum.
Routes built before the interstate era — much of the Eastern US, particularly New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maryland — have bridges and tunnels predating the standard. Many are 11-13 feet. Some are under 10 feet (most famously the Boston North End area).
RV travelers need to think of clearance as state-specific. The Western US is generally RV-friendly above 13 feet. The Eastern US requires careful planning.

The FHWA design standard is well-documented but the real-world clearance reality is decentralized. Each state DOT maintains its own low-clearance list. PickRV's role is aggregating this for RV travelers.
