I-70 Colorado mountain passes — RV reference
The marquee mountain interstate. Three passes, two tunnels, four canyons in 200 miles.
Interstate 70 west of Denver climbs through the Front Range, crosses the Continental Divide at the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel, descends past Vail and Glenwood Canyon, and exits into the Western Slope. The route is RV-friendly throughout but the cumulative grades and altitude effects make it one of the more demanding RV interstates in the US.

Is I-70 Colorado RV-friendly?
Yes — but with respect for the grades and altitude. The Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel approach from the east is a 7-mile sustained 7% climb. The Vail Pass descent is another sustained 7% drop. Glenwood Canyon (between Glenwood Springs and Eagle) is reduced-lane width through the canyon and requires attention. Plan engine braking, fuel buffer, and altitude-aware driving.

Denver to Idaho Springs (40 miles): I-70 west out of Denver, climbs to 7,500 ft.
Idaho Springs to Eisenhower Tunnel (25 miles): 7% sustained climb to 11,158 ft.
Tunnel to Vail (40 miles): descent to Silverthorne, climb to Vail Pass (10,662 ft), descent to Vail.
Vail to Glenwood Springs (55 miles): rolling, descends to 5,800 ft.
Glenwood Canyon (15 miles): canyon section with reduced lane width.
Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction (75 miles): high desert, descends to 4,500 ft.

Narrow lanes, no shoulders, frequent rockfall.
Ski-season chain requirements
November-April chains may be required.

- Yes with normal propane. 13'11" clearance accommodates most RVs.

- Loveland Pass US-6 is the required detour.
