Hazmat-restricted tunnels — US RV propane considerations
Federal hazmat restrictions apply to placard-required transport, not standard RV propane. Reference + alternatives.
US Department of Transportation regulations restrict certain hazardous materials from certain tunnels. Standard built-in RV propane tanks typically do not require placards and do not trigger tunnel hazmat restrictions. Aftermarket bulk propane or commercial transport may. This page clarifies which tunnels matter for RV travelers and which do not.

Does my RV propane require a tunnel detour?
Probably not. Federal regulation 49 CFR 397.61 applies hazmat tunnel restrictions to vehicles requiring federal hazmat placards. Standard built-in RV propane tanks (typically 20-30 gallons for motorhomes, less for trailers) are not placard-required. You can use the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel (Colorado), Lincoln Tunnel (NYC), Holland Tunnel (NYC), and similar tunnels with normal RV propane installation.

What DOT 49 CFR Part 397 + tunnel signage doesn't tell you
The federal regulation is specific and applies to placard-required transport, not standard RV propane installation. Many RV travelers are unnecessarily concerned about this.
When in doubt, ask at the tunnel entrance — staff will direct you appropriately. The default for standard RV is: use the tunnel.
