The road is unmaintained and crosses BLM, National Park Service (Mojave National Preserve), and US Army (Fort Irwin perimeter) lands. There are no services along the route — no fuel, no water, no cell coverage for roughly 75% of the route, no graded turn-back points after the first 40 miles. The eastern half (Colorado River to Marl Springs, ~70 miles) is the harder half with rock-step sections and the climb out of Lanfair Valley; the western half (Marl Springs to Afton Canyon to Camp Cady) is moderate but includes the Soda Dry Lake mud-pan section that is impassable when wet.

Second, a slide-in pop-up camper on a 4x4 1/2-ton or 3/4-ton pickup (Ford F-150 Tremor, F-250 Tremor, Chevy Silverado ZR2, Ram Power Wagon) — heavier but with more water, fuel, and recovery-gear capacity. Class B vans on 2WD chassis are absolutely not suitable for this route. Any rental without a documented all-terrain or mud-terrain tire setup is not suitable. The recovery gear loadout should include a Hi-Lift jack, two recovery boards, a recovery strap with soft shackles, and a portable air compressor for the airing-down-and-back-up cycle.
