Within its Petroglyph Canyon, archaeologists have documented more than 300 rock-art panels carrying roughly 1,700 individual design elements, attributed to Native cultures that lived in the region from the Archaic period through historic times.
The petroglyphs lie inside the 48,438-acre Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, reached on foot rather than by road — a desert walk that rewards a slow, attentive pace. The setting, close to Las Vegas yet deeply quiet, makes the rock art feel all the more remarkable.
These carvings are protected by federal law and are profoundly fragile. Stay on designated trails, view the panels from a respectful distance, and never touch, chalk, climb, or mark the rock — contact and skin oils can permanently damage images that have endured for centuries or longer. Take only photographs.
