What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The NY State Parks site says 'gorge trail open seasonally' but doesn't tell you the trail SHUTS DOWN in winter (Nov-Apr) due to ice — many fall-foliage visitors arrive late October expecting access and find it already closed. Visit Oct 5-25 for foliage + open gorge. Second non-obvious: the campground is 1mi UPHILL from the gorge entrance — most visitors drive each direction even though it's walkable. Third: NASCAR races at Watkins Glen International Speedway (4mi N) bring 100K+ visitors on race weekends (Jun + Aug); campsite premium is +50%, advance booking 12+ months. Fourth: Finger Lakes wine trail (Seneca Lake side) has 35+ wineries within 30min — combine wine + gorge for full Watkins Glen experience.
