More on Grand Teton National ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Grand Teton National Park covers roughly 310,000 acres of glacier-carved peaks, the Snake River, and seven morainal lakes in northwest Wyoming, just south of Yellowstone. It has six campgrounds that take RVs — Colter Bay, Colter Bay RV Park, Gros Ventre, Signal Mountain, Lizard Creek, and Headwaters at Flagg Ranch — plus tent-only Jenny Lake. All are reservation-only through Recreation.gov, bookable six months out. The single full-hookup option inside park boundaries is Colter Bay RV Park; everything else is dry or electric-only. The binding RV constraint most renters miss: the narrow, partly-unpaved Moose-Wilson Road prohibits any vehicle over 280 inches (23'3") in length.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. Only the figures in the strip at the top of the page, each with its link and date, were re-read on the park's own pages.
What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
NPS lists six RV campgrounds but buries the fact that exactly ONE — Colter Bay RV Park, run by concessioner Grand Teton Lodge Company — has full water/electric/sewer hookups inside the park; Headwaters at Flagg Ranch (also full hookup) is technically in the John D. Rockefeller Parkway, not the park proper. Everything else is dry or electric-only, so plan to dump at Colter Bay. Second: every per-site length cap COUNTS your tow vehicle, so a '45 ft' Gros Ventre site won't fit a 35 ft fifth-wheel plus a dually — read the per-site length on Recreation.gov, not the campground headline number. Third: the Moose-Wilson Road 23'3" ban quietly removes the prettiest, moosiest drive from any big-rig itinerary — basecamp and use a tow car or e-bike. Fourth: Gros Ventre opens earliest (late April) and closes latest (mid-October), making it the shoulder-season play when Colter Bay is shut. Fifth: free Shadow Mountain dispersed sites in Bridger-Teton NF are reached THROUGH the park off Antelope Flats Rd but need no park pass at the trailhead.
Rig limits by loop and road
Length + clearance
- ·Park-wide, our record: 45 ft
- ·Moose-Wilson Road: 23 ft — Hard ban on any vehicle over 280 in (23'3") — narrow, winding, 1.5 mi unpaved; closed Moose-to-Granite-Canyon in winter
- ·Signal Mountain Campground: 30 ft — 30 ft max combined length; tight loop with electric-hookup sites in one loop only
- ·Lizard Creek Campground: 30 ft — 30 ft max; no hookups, far north end near Yellowstone; generators first loop only
- ·Colter Bay / Gros Ventre / Headwaters: 45 ft — 45 ft max combined length including tow vehicle — verify per-site length on Recreation.gov
- ·Moose-Wilson Road: 280-inch / 23'3" length cap is the practical wall for most trailers and Class A/C rigs — no trucks/trailers, narrow paved-then-gravel surface
- ·Tow-vehicle length counts toward every per-site limit — a 28 ft trailer + truck can exceed a '45 ft' site
Dump + generator
- ·Dump station: Colter Bay (complimentary RV dump + potable fill), plus Gros Ventre and Signal Mountain (Included with stay)
- ·Generators: Colter Bay: 6am-10pm in designated loops (H, J, K, M, O) only; Signal Mountain: 8am-8pm; Lizard Creek: first loop only
Boondock alternative within 20-30 min — free dispersed, 14-day limit; gravel roads (FR 30340 network), no facilities, rough when wet
Shadow Mountain dispersed area, Bridger-Teton National Forest, off Antelope Flats Rd

What to do at Grand Teton National Park
- Jenny Lake + Cascade Canyon
- Tent-only campground here; shuttle boat across the lake cuts the hike — arrive before 8am, parking fills fast
- Mormon Row / T.A. Moulton Barn
- Iconic Tetons-behind-barn shot off Antelope Flats Rd; same turn that leads to Shadow Mountain dispersed camping
- Signal Mountain Summit Road
- 5 mi paved road to a Teton-range overlook — but it's closed to trailers and RVs over 30 ft; drive your tow car
- Oxbow Bend (Snake River)
- Sunrise reflection of Mount Moran; pullout fits rigs but is small — early arrival or you circle back

Aquatic Invasive Species inspection required at WY waters
Wyoming Game & Fish does NOT require a general boater education card but mandates Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection for all watercraft entering Wyoming waters from outside the state. AIS decal ($30 resident / $50 nonresident) funds prevention. Yellowstone Lake + Flaming Gorge + Boysen Reservoir add NPS/USBR federal rules.

WY ORV permit: $15 per calendar year, same price for residents and visitors
Wyoming State Parks requires an annual ORV registration decal costing $15 per calendar year for any off-road vehicle ridden on designated ORV trails and areas — one permit, same price for residents and non-residents, sold at wyotrails.onewyo.gov and through local agents. BLM is the largest land manager within Wyoming at roughly 18 million acres, while Yellowstone and Grand Teton ban OHV use on backcountry trails.
