More on Yellowstone National ParkField notes, rig limits by loop, seasons, what to do, quiet spots
Yellowstone National Park spreads across roughly 2.2 million acres of northwest Wyoming (with slivers in Montana and Idaho), sitting atop an active supervolcano at 6,000-8,000ft elevation. The NPS lists 11 campgrounds, but only about 10 operate in 2026 — Pebble Creek stays closed for flood-recovery work. Five are run by the park concessioner (Yellowstone National Park Lodges) and take reservations through that system; the other six are bookable on Recreation.gov, of which five open in 2026. Exactly ONE campground, Fishing Bridge RV Park, offers full hookups (50-amp electric, water, sewer) and is hard-sided rigs only. The park drew 4,762,988 recreation visits in 2025. Most rigs base near an entrance and day-trip the Grand Loop.
The notes below are PickRV's editorial record. Only the figures in the strip at the top of the page, each with its link and date, were re-read on the park's own pages.
What Yellowstone National Park's own pages say
When can a generator run?
Where allowed, 8 am to 8 pm at 60 dB or less; never at Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Pebble Creek, Slough Creek or Tower Fall. nps.gov, read Sep 24, 2026
Do I need a reservation?
Yes, everywhere — except Mammoth, which keeps first-come sites from October 15 to April 1. nps.gov, read Sep 24, 2026
Yellowstone sits on top of a still-active volcanic system that powers more than 10,000 hydrothermal features — geysers, mud pots, fumaroles, and hot springs concentrated in one landscape unlike any other in North America. Bison, elk, grizzlies, and wolves roam Lamar and Hayden valleys, and the figure-eight Grand Loop Road makes most of the famous sights reachable from a single RV-friendly corridor.
When to visit
Mid-June through early September brings the most road access and the warmest weather; May and late September offer thinner crowds and active wildlife viewing if you can tolerate cold mornings.
RV access notes
Most park campgrounds accept RVs up to about 30–40 ft; only Fishing Bridge RV Park provides full hookups, and reservations there open well in advance through Recreation.gov.

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
NPS.gov lists 11 campgrounds, but the headline hides three traps. First, only about 10 actually operate in 2026 — Pebble Creek is closed for flood recovery (the 2022 floods wrecked its water system), so the '11' on the map is not the number you can book. Second, of the six Recreation.gov campgrounds, only FIVE open in 2026, and NONE of those six has a dump station or any hookups — Mammoth, Slough Creek, Tower Fall, Indian Creek, and Lewis Lake are all dry camping. Dump and fill at one of the five concessioner-run campgrounds (Fishing Bridge, Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant, Madison) before you head to the northeast. Third, Fishing Bridge RV Park is the ONLY full-hookup campground in the entire park, it's hard-sided rigs only (no tents/tent-trailers), and it books out fast. Fourth, the trap that strands renters: Slough Creek's '30ft' limit comes with a 'rigs over 25ft not recommended' warning — walk the gravel loop and eyeball your site before committing. Fifth, the cheapest big-rig play is free dispersed camping in Custer Gallatin NF, 10-30 minutes from the west and north entrances, but bring your own water and dump first — there is nothing out there.
Rig limits by loop and road
Length + clearance
·Park-wide, our record: 95 ft
·Fishing Bridge RV Park: 95 ft — Only full-hookup campground (50-amp electric/water/sewer); hard-sided vehicles ONLY (no tents/tent-trailers); accommodates an ~18ft truck + 35ft trailer side by side. Open ~May 8 - Oct 17, 2026
·Bridge Bay / Madison: 60 ft — Concessioner-run, dump station but NO hookups; up to 60ft. Bridge Bay ~May 15 - Sep 13; Madison ~May 1 - Oct 17, 2026
·Grant Village: 50 ft — Concessioner-run, dump station, no hookups; up to 50ft. Open ~Jun 26 - Sep 26, 2026
·Canyon: 40 ft — Concessioner-run, dump station, no hookups; up to 40ft. Open ~May 29 - Sep 19, 2026
·Indian Creek (Recreation.gov): 35 ft — First-come geometry on the loop; up to 35ft, no hookups, no dump. Open ~Jun 12 - Sep 14, 2026
·Mammoth (Recreation.gov): 30 ft — 30ft max, no hookups; the only year-round campground (first-come Oct 15 - Apr 1, reservations otherwise)
·Tower Fall (Recreation.gov): 30 ft — 30ft max, no hookups, no dump; tight loop. Open ~May 22 - Sep 27, 2026
·Slough Creek (Recreation.gov): 30 ft — Up to 30ft, but rigs over 25ft are NOT recommended — walk the loop and assess your specific site first; gravel access road off the Northeast Entrance Rd. Open ~Jun 15 - Oct 12, 2026
·Lewis Lake (Recreation.gov): 25 ft — 25ft hard limit, no hookups; south end near Grant. Open ~Jun 15 - Oct 11, 2026
·Pebble Creek (Recreation.gov): 0 ft — CLOSED for 2026 — 2022 floods destroyed the water system; reservations not offered. Do not route here
·No tunnels with posted RV height limits on the main Grand Loop, but Grand Loop Road is narrow, winding, and has steep grades over passes (Sylvan, Dunraven, Craig) — drive a 35ft+ rig conservatively
·Dunraven Pass (Tower-to-Canyon) is high-elevation and opens late (~May 22, 2026) and closes early (~Oct 31) for snow — not the route for a big rig in shoulder season
·2026 road construction runs Apr-late Oct with five overnight closures (9pm-4am) and oversized/overweight-vehicle restrictions in work zones — check nps.gov/yell/conditions before towing through
Dump + generator
·Dump station: Dump stations at the concessioner-run campgrounds (Fishing Bridge RV Park, Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant Village, Madison); the six Recreation.gov campgrounds have NONE — dump before you head to Mammoth/Slough Creek/Tower Fall (Typically ~$20-30 incl. water fill at concessioner sites; verify on arrival)
·Generators: 8am-8pm at RV/combination sites only, max 60 dB at 50ft; quiet hours 10pm-7am parkwide
Boondock alternative within 10-30 min from north/west entrances — free, first-come, 16-day limit; no water/dump/trash; gravel forest roads, top off and dump tanks first
Custer Gallatin National Forest dispersed camping (e.g. Denny Creek Rd ~10 min from West Yellowstone; areas near Hebgen Lake; Travertine Rd ~10 min from Gardiner)
Seasons and closures
Full season:Mid-June - mid-September (all open campgrounds and Grand Loop passes accessible; reservations essential)
Limited access:May + October (entrance roads open in stages; Sylvan Pass/East Entrance ~May 8, Dunraven Pass ~May 22, 2026; high-elevation campgrounds close first in fall)
Known closures:
·Pebble Creek Campground CLOSED for the 2026 season — June 2022 floods destroyed the water system and several sites; no reopening timeline set
·Mammoth is the ONLY year-round campground; all others are seasonal and most close by late September / mid-October 2026
·Dunraven Pass (Canyon-Tower Fall) winter-closed ~Nov 1 - May 22; interior Grand Loop roads close to cars Nov-Apr (oversnow access only)
·Most park roads close to wheeled vehicles in early November and reopen in stages from late April through May — verify the current schedule on nps.gov/yell
What to do at Yellowstone National Park
Old Faithful / Upper Geyser Basin
Largest concentration of geysers on Earth; huge paved RV lots near the visitor center, but they fill mid-day — arrive early or park and walk the basin boardwalks
Grand Prismatic Spring (Midway Geyser Basin)
Largest hot spring in the US; small lot fills fast for rigs — the overlook trail off the Fairy Falls lot is the better photo and has more room
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone (Canyon Village)
Lower Falls + Artist Point; Canyon Campground is the closest base (40ft max). Dunraven Pass approach from the north opens late (~May 22)
Lamar Valley (Northeast Entrance Rd)
Best wildlife/wolf viewing in the park; reached via the road past Slough Creek and Pebble Creek (Pebble Creek closed) — dawn/dusk are prime, pullouts are RV-tight
Hidden — not on the official map
PickRV editor's quiet spots
Indian Creek Campground (Recreation.gov)
Quiet 70-site loop between Mammoth and Norris, up to 35ft, no hookups/dump — far less hunted than the concessioner giants
Denny Creek Rd dispersed (Custer Gallatin NF)
~10 min from West Yellowstone; free forest-road pullouts that fit RVs, no facilities — a fallback when in-park sites are gone

Wyoming rules to know before you rent
Per-state legal callout · WY
Before you rent in Wyoming — key local rules
Personal motorhomes under 26,001 lbs need no special license
Wyoming's standard Class C license covers any single vehicle or combination (except motorcycles) that does not require a CDL; a special Z endorsement on Class C is required only for recreational vehicles with a GVWR of 39,001 lbs or more. A personal motorhome under 26,001 lbs is well within plain Class C.
Aquatic Invasive Species inspection required at WY waters
Wyoming Game & Fish does NOT require a general boater education card but mandates Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) inspection for all watercraft entering Wyoming waters from outside the state. AIS decal ($30 resident / $50 nonresident) funds prevention. Yellowstone Lake + Flaming Gorge + Boysen Reservoir add NPS/USBR federal rules.
WY ORV permit: $15 per calendar year, same price for residents and visitors
Wyoming State Parks requires an annual ORV registration decal costing $15 per calendar year for any off-road vehicle ridden on designated ORV trails and areas — one permit, same price for residents and non-residents, sold at wyotrails.onewyo.gov and through local agents. BLM is the largest land manager within Wyoming at roughly 18 million acres, while Yellowstone and Grand Teton ban OHV use on backcountry trails.
Wyoming BAC 0.08%; open container in passenger area prohibited
Wyoming enforces 0.08% BAC for non-commercial drivers (0.04% commercial). Open alcoholic containers prohibited in passenger areas on public highways. Living-quarters use while parked may be permitted but is officer-discretion at roadside stops.
