What this list contains
Safety first. Trail conditions change with weather, season, and active land-management decisions. Always verify the managing-agency source linked on each trail page the day before you ride. Carry recovery gear, a communication plan, and ride within your skill level. Difficulty 4-5 trails frequently require a winch, spotter, and at least one buddy vehicle.
How Washington rides
Western Washington rides in the trees, and the state runs the show — the DNR manages the big systems here, each with its own personality. Capitol Forest outside Olympia is the mileage king, a working timber forest laced with trail and famously muddy. Walker Valley to the north is the everyman network, close to the interstate with loops for every skill level. Reiter Foothills is the hard one: rock, roots and rain-slick technical lines built deliberately for advanced riders.
Wet season is most of the year on this side of the mountains — fenders, tow straps and a change of clothes are standard kit. Check the DNR's current access pages first; active timber operations close segments with little notice.
