Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) — How It Differs From CDW and Why It Matters
Educational only · not insurance advice. PickRV is not an insurance broker, agent, producer, or carrier. Coverage varies by carrier and policy. Verify any decision with a licensed insurance professional in your state.
TL;DR
Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is a broader contractual waiver than CDW. It typically covers collision AND theft AND vandalism — closing the gap CDW leaves. Like CDW, it is not insurance, it has exclusions, and a deductible. The most common renter mistake is assuming LDW = comprehensive protection; it is not.
The boundary
Where this coverage stops
Covered
6- Collision damage to the rental vehicle (collision component).
- Theft of the entire rental vehicle.
- Vandalism to the rental vehicle.
- Fire damage (in most LDW versions).
- Loss-of-use fees at the higher LDW tier.
- Administrative + storage fees the host would otherwise charge.
Not covered
6- Tires, glass, undercarriage, and roof — typically carved out of LDW like they are from CDW.
- Off-road, unimproved-road, or off-highway use.
- Negligent or intentional acts.
- Personal property inside the vehicle.
- Mechanical breakdown unrelated to collision.
- Damage caused by unauthorized drivers.
In practice
Real-world examples
Anonymized composite scenarios illustrating typical outcomes.
Stolen rental from a Las Vegas hotel lot — LDW paid in full
A renter's 31-foot Class C was stolen from a hotel valet area in Las Vegas. The vehicle was recovered 8 days later in Nevada desert; the rig was stripped, slide-out broken, electronics gone. Total repair + electronics restoration: $42,000. The renter had purchased LDW at $34/day (8-day rental: $272). LDW paid the full $42,000 after the $1,000 deductible.
Outcome: Renter out-of-pocket: $1,000 deductible + $272 LDW premium = $1,272. Without LDW, $42,000.
Vandalism in a national park overflow lot — LDW paid windows + paint
A renter parked a Class B at an overflow lot at Yellowstone overnight. Vandals broke two windows and keyed both sides. Repair: $4,800. LDW covered the vandalism (theft and vandalism are usually combined under LDW), paying after the standard deductible.
Outcome: Renter out-of-pocket: $1,000 deductible. Without LDW, $4,800.

What insurance companies don't say
Industry insider knowledge surfaced for educational transparency.
LDW theft coverage usually requires a police report within 24 hours
If your rental is stolen, the LDW contract often requires you to file a police report within 24 hours and notify the host within 6-12 hours. Missing either deadline can void the theft component. Photograph the parking position before leaving the vehicle unattended.
Off-road exclusion is wider on LDW than CDW
Some LDW contracts use even broader off-road language than CDW — e.g. excluding 'any unpaved surface' rather than 'off-road use.' Gravel campground access roads have been ruled within the exclusion in some host-claim disputes. Confirm specific access roads with the host in writing before the trip.
LDW does not displace state minimum liability
LDW protects you from damage TO the rental. It does not provide liability for injuries or property damage to OTHERS. Liability protection comes from the host's commercial policy (or your personal auto liability extension) — never from LDW alone.
By state
State variations
NYNew York
NY GBL §396-z caps LDW pricing for rental cars and requires plain-language exclusion disclosure.
CACalifornia
California CIC §1758.85 imposes disclosure obligations on LDW sellers.
NVNevada
Nevada NRS §482 requires written exclusion disclosure at rental contract execution.
FAQ
Is LDW better than CDW?
Broader, not necessarily better. LDW adds theft and vandalism to CDW's collision coverage. If theft is unlikely on your trip (rural campground vs. urban hotel), CDW may be sufficient. If theft is plausible (any urban or tourist-magnet area), LDW is worth the premium difference.
Does my credit card duplicate LDW?
Credit card rental coverage rarely includes theft. Many cards explicitly exclude RVs and motorhomes from any coverage. Confirm with your card issuer in writing before declining LDW.
Will LDW raise my own insurance rates?
No — LDW is a contractual waiver, not insurance. There is no insurance claim on your record because no insurance was involved.
What is the LDW deductible?
Typically $500-$2,000. Higher-tier LDW often reduces or eliminates the deductible for an additional daily premium.
Can the host enforce LDW exclusions retroactively?
Yes — if the loss falls within an excluded category (off-road, unauthorized driver, intoxicated driver), the host can deny coverage and pursue the renter for the full repair amount.
When to consult a broker
Talk to a broker if you are debating whether your personal auto policy + non-owner endorsement is cheaper across multiple trips per year than buying LDW each rental. For renters who travel 3+ times per year in motorhomes, a non-owner specialty auto policy is frequently cheaper annually than per-trip LDW.

Now the thing you were going to insure
Coverage only makes sense against a specific rig and a specific week — the deductible on a 30-foot Class C is not the deductible on a towable. Start from what you would actually drive.
