Falls of the Ohio State Park sits on the banks of the Ohio River in Clarksville, Indiana, just across from Louisville, and protects one of the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world. Managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the park pairs a riverside expanse of ancient coral-reef rock with a modern interpretive center overlooking the beds. For an RV family crossing the Ohio Valley, it is an easy and astonishing dive into deep time.
When is the best time to see the fossil beds at Falls of the Ohio?
August through October, when the Ohio River is at its lowest, gives the best access to the exposed fossil beds. The Indiana DNR park has an interpretive center open year-round; fossil collecting on the beds is prohibited, so come to look, not to take.

The Indiana DNR describes the park's 390-million-year-old fossil beds as among the largest exposed Devonian fossil beds in the world, covering roughly 220 acres of ancient sea-floor rock once part of a tropical coral reef. More than 600 fossil species, including over 250 corals, have been documented here.
An interpretive center overlooks the beds with interactive, immersive exhibits that put the rock in context, making the site approachable for families and first-time fossil viewers alike.
Access to the beds themselves depends on the river: the DNR notes that August through October, when water is lowest, offers the best accessibility. Fossil collecting is prohibited on the beds and riverbank, so confirm current hours and conditions on the official Indiana DNR page and come to observe rather than collect.
