Thirty-five miles per hour on every paved foot of Skyline Drive's 105-mile crest run through Shenandoah National Park — that is the slowest posted speed limit of any major US national park scenic drive per the Federal Highway Administration's Public Roads survey of NPS units, and a deliberate constraint that turns the corridor into a roughly 4-hour rig-friendly drive end-to-end without ever permitting the kind of overtaking-and-tailgating dynamic that plagues the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier or the Tioga Pass in Yosemite. The limit also exists for ecological reasons: black bears, white-tailed deer, and bobcats routinely cross the road, and the wildlife-collision rate at higher posted speeds during the 1930s and 1940s contributed to the eventual ceiling-down to 35 mph park-wide. Shenandoah County's 509 sq mi wrap the eastern Shenandoah Valley between Massanutten Mountain (the 4,400-ft peak whose distinctive double-summit silhouette dominates the valley horizon) and the Blue Ridge crest where Shenandoah NP sits, with the New Market Gap (US-211 from Luray east across the park to New Market on I-81) the only cross-park rig-friendly route in the entire county.

The Shenandoah Valley's geology is fundamentally different from the Blue Ridge: the valley floor is a Cambrian-Ordovician limestone-and-dolomite basin (the same karst lithology that produces Luray Caverns and Endless Caverns), while the Blue Ridge to the east is Precambrian metamorphic schist and gneiss roughly a billion years older per the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy bedrock map. Big Meadows Campground at Skyline Drive MP 51 is the largest of Shenandoah NP's four RV-friendly loops, accepting rigs to 40 ft on 217 sites with no hookups on reservation through recreation.gov 6 months ahead. Lewis Mountain Campground (MP 57, rigs to 35 ft, 30 sites) is the alternative. George Washington National Forest's Lee Ranger District permits 14-day dispersed camping at signed sites along Forest Road 274 and the Massanutten Mountain trail network with rigs to 30 ft. Woodstock (population 5,097, the county seat) anchors the I-81 corridor. The Shenandoah NP Compendium caps rigs above Big Meadows at 30 ft due to switchback geometry.
