Pre-war classics (before 1942) are the rarest segment of PickRV's classic cohort. Most rigs are Concours or Show grade and rent for short-block events (weddings, photo shoots, concours displays) rather than multi-day touring.

What defines this era
Mechanically simple by modern standards — three-speed manual transmissions, mechanical brakes, no synchronizers on early models, hand-crank starting on the earliest cars.
Bodywork is steel-on-wood frame in many cases — particularly the earliest Ford Model T and Model A bodies — making the rigs sensitive to humidity and storage conditions.
Top speed typically 35-55 mph. Highway use is technically possible but uncomfortable; most owners drive these in town and at parades.

Driving reality
- Three-speed manual transmission without synchros (early Model A) requires double-clutching shifts. The host will walk you through.
- Mechanical brakes (cable or rod actuated) demand significantly more pedal pressure and stopping distance than modern hydraulic systems.
- No air conditioning, no power steering, no power brakes, no seatbelts on most pre-war models (PickRV requires installed lap belts as a rental condition).
- Pre-war engines run on leaded fuel historically; modern unleaded gas plus a lead-substitute additive is standard practice for short-trip use.

Can I drive a Model A on a highway?
Technically yes (the Model A is highway-rated at 45-55 mph), but most owners restrict highway use to short trips. PickRV's pre-war cohort is mostly event-only (weddings, photo shoots, concours).
Do I need previous experience?
Strongly recommended for any non-synchromesh transmission. The host walkthrough includes a parking-lot familiarization, and most pre-war rentals require demonstrated comfort before highway driving.
Is air conditioning available?
No. Pre-war classics predate factory air conditioning. Some restomod conversions exist but are not in the standard PickRV pre-war cohort.
