Sleeping bag temperature ratings — the math no one explains
EN/ISO temperature ratings on sleeping bags are tested per ISO 23537. Two numbers matter: the 'comfort' rating (you, sleeping in a base layer, will be comfortable) and the 'limit' rating (a male standard-test sleeper will survive but not be comfortable). Female sleepers should use the comfort rating; male sleepers can plan to the limit rating. The bag rating assumes a sleeping pad with R-value at least 4 and a tent or shelter blocking wind. For a 30°F nighttime low, buy a bag with a 20°F comfort rating — the 10°F buffer absorbs damp ground, wind exposure, and the inevitable sleep on top of layers rather than inside. Down fill (650-900 fill power) is lighter and more compressible but useless when wet; synthetic fill insulates wet but weighs more.
