Cooler ice math — keeping food safe through day 4
USDA food safety guidance: perishables (raw meat, dairy, eggs) must stay below 40°F. A pre-chilled 50-quart cooler packed 2/3 with food and 1/3 with ice will hold below 40°F for 3-4 days in 75°F ambient if opened sparingly. For longer trips, the math: ice melts at roughly 1 lb per day per gallon of cooler air space at moderate temps, faster in heat. Block ice (frozen 1-gal water jugs) outlasts cube ice 2-3x because the surface-to-volume ratio is lower. Two-cooler discipline (one for drinks accessed frequently, one for food opened only at meal-prep) doubles food-cooler life. Dry ice (-109°F) extends cold-keeping a week+ but freezes anything it touches solid — separate from soft items with newspaper layers.
