Fairbanks + Denali, Alaska northern lights
Interior Alaska sits almost directly under the auroral oval, which makes Fairbanks and Denali the closest thing the US has to a sure bet for northern lights — on a clear, dark night in season the sky can come alive overhead. Riley Creek at Denali keeps the rig in the park, away from town glow, with long dark hours to wait out the show.
Best season
Dark-sky season mid-August to mid-April (skies are too bright in June–July)
Where
Denali National Park & Preserve (NPS) + Interior Alaska
Nearest RV base
Riley Creek Campground, Denali NP
Watch it honestly
The NPS notes summer (June–July) is far too bright; aim mid-August to mid-April, on a clear night between about 10 PM and 2 AM. Even here it's never guaranteed — check the NOAA SWPC 30-minute aurora forecast and clouds before you settle in.
Plan with the official source (and the NOAA SWPC aurora forecast): NPS — Denali aurora .
