Why this checklist exists
The first-time RV rental experience splits into two phases that nobody talks about: the pre-pickup walkthrough and the return-day parity check. Both phases run from the same list. Most first-time renters arrive at pickup, glance at the rig, sign the paperwork, and discover at return that a half-empty propane tank or a hairline windshield crack from before they took possession is now their financial problem. This 47-point checklist exists to make sure that never happens to you.
How to use the interactive + printable versions
The interactive version below saves your progress to your own browser. Check items at pickup, leave the page, drive 800 miles, and your boxes are still checked when you re-open the page at return-day. The PDF version is print-formatted for a single double-sided letter-size sheet so you can walk the rig with paper + a phone for photos rather than juggling a laptop. Use both: paper during the walkthrough, web at home for the parity check.
Most-skipped items + why they matter most
The most-skipped items are exterior #11 (photograph existing damage from 8 angles) and documents #7 (photograph the fuel gauge and odometer at handoff). Both items take 90 seconds and prevent the two highest-frequency post-return disputes (claimed damage that pre-existed; claimed fuel-fill below contract terms). The systems section catches the slow leaks (propane detector dead; generator transfer switch frozen) that turn a working-vacation into a costly tow. The documents section catches the paperwork mismatches (rental agreement signed against a different VIN than the rig you took home) that are surprisingly common and surprisingly hard to unwind after the fact.

Frequently asked questions
- Is there a downloadable PDF version of this checklist?
- Yes — the PDF download link sits at the bottom of the interactive checklist. The PDF is print-formatted for a single double-sided letter-size sheet and covers all 47 items. Many renters prefer to walk the rig with the printed copy and a phone for photos, then re-confirm on the interactive web version at home.
- Does my progress save between sessions?
- Yes — the interactive checkboxes save to your browser's localStorage under a single key. If you check items on pickup-day, your boxes will still be checked when you return for the return-day inspection. The data does not leave your browser and is not transmitted to PickRV.
- Why does the checklist insist on photographing existing damage?
- Photographs are your evidence in the rare case a damage dispute arises after return. Timestamped photos from 8 exterior angles plus each interior room cover almost all disputes. Take them at handoff with the host present, send them to yourself by email immediately so they are timestamped server-side as well as in your camera roll.
