Channel Islands, California whale watching
Off Ventura, the cold, nutrient-rich water around the Channel Islands draws an extraordinary cast — gray whales tracing the coast in winter, then blue and fin whales, the largest animals that have ever lived, feeding offshore in summer. The islands themselves are a boat ride away, so most travelers base on the mainland coast and run out to the whales for the day.
Typical season
Gray whales mid-December to mid-March; blue, fin and humpback whales late May to September
Whales to look for
Gray whale, Blue whale, Fin whale, Humpback whale
