Renting an RV in Charleston: what to know before pickup
Charleston has its own arrival logistics. Coonskin Park RV Camp handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Dump stations & water
- Coonskin Park — free, potable water
Camp the first night
- Coonskin Park RV Camp · 6 mi out · Electric on 30 sites; water at host station
Skip the classic mistake
Driving New River Gorge Bridge in a high-profile rig without checking wind advisories
Best window: April through May and September through October — Allegheny Plateau spring and fall with…
The Charleston window to avoid
July through August — heat index 90-95 F and Kanawha River humidity.
What that mistake costs
Bridge wind closures triggered at 50+ mph sustained winds, common in fall
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of Charleston, 1801 Washington St E, Charleston, WV 25311, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Coonskin Park RV Camp — Charleston Code Sec. 86-25 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Midland Trail National Scenic Byway (US-60) (some seasonal closures).
