Renting an RV in Shenandoah: what to know before pickup
Shenandoah has its own arrival logistics. Mathews Arm Campground handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Dump stations & water
- Mathews Arm Campground — free, potable water
Camp the first night
- Mathews Arm Campground · 10 mi out · No hookups; potable water at host station
Skip the classic mistake
Driving Skyline Drive in a Class A without checking the 30 ft tunnel restriction at Mary's Rock
Best window: April through May and September through October — Skyline Drive green season and Blue…
The Shenandoah window to avoid
January through February — Skyline Drive partial closures and many SNP services closed.
What that mistake costs
Mary's Rock Tunnel has 12'8 vertical clearance; rigs over 12'8 must detour 35 mi
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of Luray, 800 W Main St, Luray, VA 22835, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Mathews Arm Campground — Luray Code Sec. 14-32 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Skyline Drive (NPS, 105 mi) (some seasonal closures).
