Leesylvania State Park is a 542-acre Virginia state park on the Potomac River, 25 miles south of Washington DC. The 38-site RV campground is one of the closest-to-DC full-hookup state park options. The marina has 200 boat slips + ramp; bass + striper fishing year-round. Site of the original Lee family plantation (Robert E. Lee ancestors).

What the official site doesn't tell you
PickRV editor's field notes
The VA State Parks site lists Leesylvania as 'family-friendly Potomac access' but doesn't tell you that the Potomac at this point is 1.5 MILES WIDE — looks like an estuary, not a river. Many DC visitors expecting a creek-like river are surprised. Second non-obvious: the campground is THE closest full-hookup state park to DC — 25mi vs Pohick Bay's 18mi (Pohick is electric-only no sewer). For DC-area RVers, this is the gold standard. Third: the historic Lee plantation site has free guided tours Saturdays Jun-Aug — most visitors miss the schedule. Fourth: the marina ramp accommodates boats up to 25ft; perfect for towed-boat RV trips.

Before you rent in Virginia — key local rules
No CDL is needed for motorhomes under 26,001 lbs
Virginia defines a commercial motor vehicle as a single vehicle of 26,001+ lbs GVWR (or heavy combinations, 16+ passengers, hazmat), and expressly exempts operators of recreational vehicles used only for personal use from CDL requirements; a standard Virginia driver's license covers personal motorhomes under 26,001 lbs.

Boating Safety Education Certificate required (phased rollout complete)
Virginia DWR requires Boating Safety Education Certificate for ALL motorized-vessel operators (phased in by birth year through 2016, now universal). Chesapeake Bay + Potomac River add MD/DC inter-jurisdictional rules; reciprocity honored for NASBLA-approved courses from any state.

Spearhead Trails connects to Hatfield-McCoy, but permits do not transfer
Virginia's public OHV riding is concentrated in the Spearhead Trails system in southwest Virginia (600+ mi), joined to West Virginia's Hatfield-McCoy Trails by a connector route completed in fall 2025. The connection is physical only: each authority sells its own permit and neither honors the other's, so riding both systems means buying a trail permit from both organizations. No statewide Virginia OHV sticker covers state lands.

0.08% BAC; driver may not drink — no passenger open-container ban
Virginia sets the DUI limit at 0.08% BAC (Va. Code §18.2-266) and makes it unlawful for the driver to consume alcohol while driving (§18.2-323.1), but there is no general state ban on passengers holding open containers. An open container within the driver's reach creates a rebuttable presumption that the driver was drinking — and §18.2-323.1 expressly excludes a motor home's living quarters from that passenger area.
