About these eventsEach one in its own record's words.
Tennessee spring off-road season — Windrock & Royal Blue. Windrock Park near Oliver Springs is one of the largest privately run OHV areas in the eastern U.S., and spring brings green Appalachian scenery and dry-enough trails across its hundreds of miles of routes alongside the adjacent Royal Blue WMA. On-site RV camping makes a multi-day base practical for groups wheeling a mix of difficulty.
Synchronous Fireflies, Great Smoky Mountains 2027. For roughly two weeks each year between late May and mid-June, synchronous fireflies at Elkmont in Great Smoky Mountains National Park flash in coordinated waves — one of the only places in the Western Hemisphere where the phenomenon draws organized public viewing. The honest logistics: the National Park Service manages access to the Elkmont viewing period through a vehicle-pass lottery on recreation.gov, announced each spring — typically late April — once biologists predict the peak window, so the dates above are the typical range, not a schedule. Plan A is the lottery; plan B is simply camping in the park during the window — Elkmont Campground sits beside the viewing area and books out for the season the moment the window becomes guessable, with Cades Cove Campground as the fallback. Late May is the front edge of Smokies high season, so Knoxville-market rigs need 8-10 weeks of lead. Even without a firefly pass, synchronous flashing is often visible around park campgrounds in the window — bring red-filtered lights only.
CMA Music Festival 2027 — Nashville. CMA Music Festival 2027. Nashville KOA + Two Rivers Campground for RV bases ~20 min from downtown.
Bristol Night Race Weekend 2027. The night race at Bristol Motor Speedway moves back to its traditional August spot in 2027: the speedway's own announcement gives Thursday, August 12 through Saturday, August 14, with the main race under the lights on Saturday night. For a rig, the practical details are on the speedway's camping page. Campers pick up permits at their campground's check-in booth under the name on the reservation; each site gets one vehicle pass and one RV pass, to be displayed on the driver's side of the windshield and the passenger side of the camper. The Dragstrip and Landing campgrounds use Entrance No. 5 on Sweet Knobs Trail, and the Medallion campground uses Entrance No. 3 on Medallion Drive. Once the campgrounds open for the event they stay open 24 hours a day, and extra vehicles go through the check-in booth rather than onto a neighbor's site.
Memorial Day — Great Smoky Mountains. Memorial Day opens the busy Smokies summer. Townsend and Gatlinburg-gateway RV parks fill as the season's first major holiday brings family travelers to the park.
CMA Music Festival 2028 — Nashville. CMA Music Festival 2028. Nashville KOA + Two Rivers Campground.
Great Smoky Mountains foliage peak. Great Smoky Mountains National Park fall foliage peaks mid-October at mid-elevations. Elkmont, Cades Cove, Smokemont campgrounds RV-accessible.
Easter Weekend — Great Smoky Mountains. Easter weekend kicks off the Smoky Mountains spring season as wildflowers bloom. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge RV resorts fill with family travelers.
Bristol Spring Race Weekend 2027. Bristol Motor Speedway announced in August 2026 that its spring race returns to its familiar April slot in 2027, on the weekend of April 9 through 11, with racing on each of the three days and the Food City 500 on Sunday. The speedway runs its own campgrounds, and they are built for rigs: level asphalt and gravel sites on paved roads, water, sewer and 30- or 50-amp electric hookups, a shower facility, Wi-Fi and ice, and signature sites with a concrete pad, fire pit, grill and patio furniture. Some sites run as large as 30 by 60 feet. Pets are allowed with restrictions. April in the Tennessee and Virginia highlands can swing from warm afternoons to frosty mornings, so a rig with a working furnace is the comfortable way to spend the weekend at the track.
World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest 2027. Memphis's World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is the anchor of the city's barbecue calendar — hundreds of teams, elaborate multi-story team booths, and a week when the whole city smells like hickory. The 2027 dates are not yet officially announced: the contest has run mid-May for decades (the 2026 edition was May 13-16 at Liberty Park), and the organizers of SmokeSlam have announced they are pausing to prepare a unified Memphis barbecue festival with the contest for 2027, so expect the format details to firm up once that plan is published — treat the mid-May window here as the planning target and confirm against the official Memphis in May calendar before booking flights. For an RV trip, Memphis is well set up: T.O. Fuller State Park has a campground inside the city limits, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park sits on the bluffs north of town, and Tom Sawyer's RV Park across the river in West Memphis, Arkansas parks you on the Mississippi's bank watching towboats push past your windshield. May in Memphis pairs the contest with peak patio-and-blues season on Beale Street.

- Wildfire-season disclosure: western states (CA, OR, WA, CO, MT, AZ, NM) may issue evacuation orders during summer — monitor InciWeb

Asked about summer RV trips in Tennessee
When should I book a summer RV trip in Tennessee?
Book the campground first: set the Recreation.gov and state-park alerts for it, then book the rig once the site is confirmed.
What category of rig works best for a summer RV trip in Tennessee?
The dated entries on this page list RVs and off-road first most often; each event's page names the rig it suits and why.
What will the final price include?
The nightly rate you see is the rig's complete price. Before you pay, checkout itemizes every line openly — the transparent service fee, any host-set cleaning fee and any tax — with no surprises. See /pricing for the full fee breakdown.
What insurance applies when renting an RV for a summer trip in Tennessee?
PickRV is not the insurer and does not sell or offer coverage. Renters arrange their own coverage; hosts may carry their own commercial policy. Confirm your personal auto or RV policy covers rentals — and your summer route and intended use — before pickup.
Can I cancel a summer booking in Tennessee?
Yes — every booking carries the platform cancellation floor: cancel at least 48 hours before pickup for a full refund of the rental charges. Hosts can offer more generous terms than the floor, never stricter. Where local government issues an evacuation order or trip-disabling notice (e.g. hurricane, wildfire), the booking may qualify for a review on a case-by-case basis.
