About these eventsEach one in its own record's words.
OBX summer + Hatteras window 2027. Cape Hatteras National Seashore RV-accessible. 4WD permit for beach driving. Pontoon rentals on Sound side.
North Carolina State Fair 2026. The N.C. State Fair runs October 15 through 25, 2026 on the state fairgrounds in Raleigh, where the N.C. Department of Agriculture pairs the old competitions with new additions each year, this time including a Ferris wheel for the America 250 celebration. The RV fact that catches people is the calendar of the fairgrounds' own campground. It sits right beside I-40 with full-hookup sites and stays open year-round, except in October, when it closes to the public for the fair. So a fair trip needs a base elsewhere in the Triangle. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area near Apex runs a year-round campground with water and electric sites, booked through North Carolina State Parks, and discounted advance tickets for the fair sell online through October 15.
Lexington Barbecue Festival 2026. Lexington, North Carolina is the acknowledged capital of Lexington-style barbecue — hickory-smoked pork shoulder with a red vinegar dip — and its Barbecue Festival packs the uptown Main Street with pit smoke, six entertainment stages and 250+ vendors on one Saturday every October (the 42nd annual, October 24, 2026). It's a day trip in festival form, and it slots neatly into a Piedmont RV loop: the Uwharrie National Forest campgrounds are within about an hour to the east, and High Rock Lake sits just south of town — pine-and-lake fall camping between plates of the real thing.
MerleFest 2027 (40th). MerleFest 2027 (the festival's 40th anniversary year) runs April 29 to May 2 at Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro NC. Founded 1988 by Doc Watson in tribute to his late son Merle Watson, the festival features 80+ artists across 13 stages over 4 days. On-site RV camping available via merlefest.org's Lakeside Camping reservation (full hookups, fills by January). Off-site: Stone Mountain State Park (~25 mi west, electric only, Blue Ridge views), W. Kerr Scott Reservoir COE campgrounds (Bandits Roost, Warrior Creek — both ~10 mi west, full hookups), Doughton Park NPS campground (~45 mi northwest on the Blue Ridge Parkway, no hookups).
Blue Ridge Parkway Fall Foliage 2027. The Blue Ridge Parkway's fall color runs on elevation: the high sections near Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell can start turning in late September, and most of the corridor changes through October — which means a well-timed RV trip can hit peak color somewhere along the corridor for weeks. The NPS itself calls exact timing impossible to predict, so build mobility into the plan. The parkway is consistently among the most visited units in the national park system, and October is its crush month, with weekend overlooks around Asheville and Boone filling by mid-morning. The parkway's own campgrounds are the move: Julian Price Park Campground near Blowing Rock sits beside a lake at the foot of Grandfather Mountain, and Linville Falls Campground puts you at the head of the gorge — both reservable on recreation.gov and heavily booked for October weekends. Asheville-market rentals carry their highest demand of the year in this window; 10-12 weeks of lead is realistic. Watch vehicle length limits: several parkway tunnels south of Asheville constrain taller rigs — check clearances against your rig before routing.
North Carolina Seafood Festival 2027. The NC Seafood Festival has held to one weekend for decades: its organizers say it has run on the first full weekend in October since 1987, on the Morehead City waterfront and free to the public. In 2027 that weekend begins Friday, October 1 and ends Sunday, October 3. The North Carolina Seafood Festival, Inc. was organized to hold a festival every year on that weekend, to show what the seafood industry means to the state and to teach the public about seafood, so the program leans on the working coast: a blessing of the fleet, a seafood cooking stage, and evening fundraisers such as Bites and Blues, which sells its own tickets. The festival publishes a parking and accessibility FAQ and an accommodations page. For a boat or an RV trip, plan the waterfront as a walk-in destination and keep the rig parked outside the festival footprint.
What this page covers
If you are planning a coastal RV beach trip in this state, this page covers the realistic RV-park coastal anchors (state parks + private parks with ocean-view sites), the salt-air rig-care basics, the tide windows for beach-driving zones (where legal), the hurricane-season disclosure for Atlantic + Gulf states, and the Pacific-coast storm-window distinctions.
North Carolina's coastal RV-park anchors operate primarily Memorial Day through Labor Day. OBX is the primary pickup hub. Salt-air rig care + tide windows + hurricane-season disclosure (where applicable) are covered. Holiday weekends book first on the coast, so settle the campground before the rig.
The window. Memorial Day through Labor Day for most US coasts. Atlantic + Gulf hurricane season is June 1 - November 30; Pacific storm-watching window is November - February.
What guidebooks leave out6 things to know before you book.
- Salt-air corrosion on Class A + Class C rigs accelerates roof + slide-out seal degradation — freshwater rinse after every beach trip
- Beach-driving zones (e.g. Padre Island National Seashore, Daytona Beach) require tire-pressure deflation to 18-20 PSI + tow strap on hand
- Hurricane-season disclosure: confirmed county evacuation orders may qualify a booking for cancellation review — consult NHC + state emergency-management before travel
- Tide window awareness: low tide drives some launch ramps + beach-access roads — high tide closes them entirely
- Pacific-coast storm watching (Nov-Feb) is a counter-season RV window — heated rig + rain-rated windshield wipers required
- State park beach-side RV sites book early for Memorial Day through Labor Day — fall back to county + private parks

Asked about beach RV trips in North Carolina
When should I book a beach RV trip in North Carolina?
Book the campground first: set the Recreation.gov and state-park alerts for it, then book the rig once the site is confirmed.
What category of rig works best for a beach RV trip in North Carolina?
The dated entries on this page list RVs first most often; each event's page names the rig it suits and why.
What will the final price include?
The nightly rate you see is the rig's complete price. Before you pay, checkout itemizes every line openly — the transparent service fee, any host-set cleaning fee and any tax — with no surprises. See /pricing for the full fee breakdown.
What insurance applies when renting an RV for a beach trip in North Carolina?
PickRV is not the insurer and does not sell or offer coverage. Renters arrange their own coverage; hosts may carry their own commercial policy. Confirm your personal auto or RV policy covers rentals — and your beach route and intended use — before pickup.
Can I cancel a beach booking in North Carolina?
Yes — every booking carries the platform cancellation floor: cancel at least 48 hours before pickup for a full refund of the rental charges. Hosts can offer more generous terms than the floor, never stricter. Where local government issues an evacuation order or trip-disabling notice (e.g. hurricane, wildfire), the booking may qualify for a review on a case-by-case basis.
