Renting an RV in Lewes: what to know before pickup
Lewes has its own arrival logistics. Cape Henlopen State Park Campground handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
Recreational vehicles may not be parked overnight on city streets or in metered lots; bulk vehicles restricted in historic district
Lewes Code Sec. 197-46
Dump stations & water
- Cape Henlopen State Park — free, potable water

Skip the classic mistake
Trying to load the Cape May-Lewes Ferry without a 24-hour reservation in summer
Best window: Mid-May through June and September through mid-October — pre/post peak summer crowds and…
The Lewes window to avoid
January through February — coastal nor'easter activity and historic-district businesses largely closed.
What that mistake costs
Walk-up RVs are turned away during summer/holiday weekends; standby line backs up onto DE-1
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of Rehoboth, 19474 Coastal Hwy, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Cape Henlopen State Park Campground — Lewes Code Sec. 197-46 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Cape May-Lewes Ferry crossing to New Jersey (some seasonal closures).
