Cherohala Skyway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with Robbinsville, North Carolina, via 43 miles of paved scenic byway through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. The Federal Highway Administration designated it a National Scenic Byway. Built specifically to accommodate touring vehicles — gentle grades, generous shoulders, no commercial traffic — Cherohala Skyway is the underdog Smokies-region scenic drive. It is RV-friendly in every way the Tail of the Dragon is not.

What makes Cherohala different from the Dragon
Cherohala Skyway was completed in 1996 as a deliberate federal scenic byway. The construction included engineered curves with generous radii, full shoulders, and gentle grades — the opposite of the Dragon's tight-curve geometry.
The byway runs through the Cherokee National Forest (Tennessee side) and Nantahala National Forest (North Carolina side). The high point at 5,400 ft includes views into both states. Multiple USFS campgrounds along the route accommodate RV travelers.
Robbinsville at the eastern terminus is a small town with multiple RV services. Tellico Plains at the western terminus is similar. Both anchor the route well.
What Tennessee + NC tourism boards doesn't tell you
Cherohala doesn't get the press the Tail of the Dragon gets. That's a feature for RV travelers. The road is uncrowded. The motorcycle community largely skips it (no curves to attack). The overlook parking is rarely full.
Tourism boards tend to lump it with the Dragon in '50 scenic drives' lists without distinguishing. Cherohala is a different experience: gentler, more contemplative, RV-suitable.
The connecting routes from Cherohala terminus into Great Smoky Mountains National Park (via US-129 north section, NOT the Dragon section) are also RV-friendly. The full circuit Robbinsville → Cherohala → Tellico Plains → US-411 → Maryville → US-321 → Gatlinburg → US-441 Newfound Gap → Cherokee → US-19 → Robbinsville makes an excellent multi-day RV loop.
