Storage Insurance for Hosts — Coverage While the Rig Is Parked
Storage is the longest part of a rental rig's year. Here is the coverage map.
TL;DR
RVs in storage face theft, weather damage, fire, and vandalism exposure. Standard commercial RV insurance typically covers storage-period damage; some hosts buy storage-only seasonal coverage during long off-seasons. Coverage gaps include flooding (often a separate rider), vermin damage, and pre-existing condition deterioration.

Storage facility fire destroyed rig — comprehensive paid ACV
A host's Class C was destroyed in a fire at the storage facility (cause: another tenant's vehicle electrical fire). The host's commercial RV insurance paid the rig's ACV ($68,000) minus deductible. Storage facility insurance also paid; subrogation between carriers determined the final responsibility.
Outcome: Host received full ACV after deductible. Lesson: comprehensive coverage during storage prevents catastrophic loss.

Industry insider knowledge surfaced for educational transparency.
Storage facility insurance is separate from yours
Storage facilities carry their own insurance — usually covering the facility's structure and operations. Damage to your rig at the facility is primarily YOUR insurance's responsibility; the facility insurance may pay only if facility negligence is proven.
Vermin damage is rarely covered
Mice, rats, and other vermin can cause significant damage to RVs in storage (chewed wiring, nesting in upholstery). Most policies exclude vermin damage. Preventive measures (sealed entries, traps, periodic inspection) are renter responsibility.
Flood riders are essential in high-risk areas
If your storage location is in a flood zone or near waterways, a separate flood rider is essential. Standard comprehensive does NOT cover flood.
FAQ
Does my insurance cover the rig at home in storage?
Usually yes if the rig is on your insured property. Off-site storage may need address disclosure to the carrier.
What about long-term storage (6+ months)?
Some carriers offer reduced 'lay-up' rates during long-term storage with the rig immobilized and battery disconnected. Confirm with your carrier.
Is theft covered during storage?
Yes under comprehensive. Most carriers require theft to be reported to police within 24 hours of discovery.
What about damage from another tenant's vehicle?
Your comprehensive covers it; subrogation between carriers determines final responsibility.
Should I have my rig at home or in a facility?
Risk profile depends on neighborhood, HOA rules, and your homeowners coverage. Facilities offer more security but add storage cost; home storage is convenient but may expose to HOA fines.
When to consult a broker
Talk to a licensed insurance professional and a commercial-use specialist before you store rigs at off-site facilities or in high-risk areas (flood zones, urban areas). Commercial-use insurance for vehicles listed on peer-to-peer marketplaces is its own underwriting category; many personal-policy gaps surface only at claim time.
