Yellowstone's 2027 summer season is the park's prime RV window — the months when the high-elevation roads are clear, the campgrounds are open, and the geyser basins, Lamar Valley wildlife, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are all reachable on one loop. An RV is the natural way to do it: in-park lodging books out a year ahead and there is no public transportation inside Yellowstone, so a self-contained rig solves both the bed and the wheels in one move. There is one big planning change for 2027. Reservations for all the major park campgrounds — Fishing Bridge RV Park, Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant, and Madison — move to Recreation.gov, and the booking window shrinks from roughly thirteen months out to about six months in advance. That makes the spring of 2027 a hard, fixed scramble rather than a slow build, so calendar the on-sale date the moment the NPS posts it. The second reality is geography and rig size. Fishing Bridge is the only full-hookup campground inside the park, it takes hard-sided RVs only (no pop-ups or soft-sided trailers, because of grizzly activity), and it can fit combined lengths up to about 95 ft. The other in-park campgrounds are dry. Most park roads cap rigs at 75 ft, and Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth Highway are tight, steep grades better suited to rigs under 30 ft. Per-vehicle-type recommendations
RV
A Class C in the 22-28 ft range is the sweet spot: it books a 40-ft in-park dry site easily, clears the 75-ft road limit with room to spare, and handles Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth grades far better than a 35-ft Class A. If you want full hookups inside the park, Fishing Bridge takes combined lengths to ~95 ft but only hard-sided rigs.
Trucks & vans
A Class B campervan is the most flexible Yellowstone rig. It parks at crowded trailheads and geyser-basin lots where bigger rigs cannot, drives the entire Grand Loop including the tight Tower-Canyon stretch over Dunraven Pass, and counts as hard-sided for Fishing Bridge. Trade-off is tank size — plan dump stops every couple of days.
Towable
A travel trailer under 30 ft lets you unhitch at a gateway full-hookup park in West Yellowstone or Gardiner, then daily-drive the tow vehicle into the park unrestricted. Avoid towing over the Beartooth Highway's 10% switchback grades. Note pop-ups and soft-sided trailers are barred at Fishing Bridge due to grizzly activity.

NPS Yellowstone
By law, stay at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and at least 25 yards from bison, elk, and all other wildlife. Bison gore more visitors than any other animal — never approach for photos.
NPS Yellowstone (bear safety)
Carry bear spray in a quick-draw holster, not buried in a pack. It is over 90% effective; deploy when a charging bear is roughly 50-60 ft out, aiming slightly down and adjusting for crosswind.
NPS Yellowstone (food storage)
Store all food, coolers, and scented items in a hard-sided vehicle or a bear box when not in use. Fishing Bridge RV Park is hard-sided-only — pop-ups and soft-sided trailers are not permitted because of grizzly activity.

Most of the park sits at 7,000-8,000 ft. Afternoon thunderstorms with hail and lightning are common in summer, and snow can fall at elevation even in June or September. Pack layers and check nps.gov/yell conditions daily.

Most park roads cap RVs at 75 ft. The Beartooth Highway (opens ~Memorial Day) and Dunraven Pass have steep 10% grades and tight switchbacks — keep rigs under 30 ft there and check the segment is open before committing.
