Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico elk rut
Valles Caldera is a giant volcanic bowl of grassland in the Jemez Mountains, and its thousands of elk turn the autumn evenings into a chorus of bugles — the park even builds a Fall Fiesta around it. There's no campground inside the preserve, so the rig bases nearby in the Santa Fe National Forest.
