East-west-trending mountain ranges are vanishingly rare in North America — every major continental range from the Appalachians to the Rockies to the Sierras runs broadly north-south — but the Ouachita Mountains rising across McCurtain County to 1,990 ft at Rich Mountain on the Arkansas border are a Pennsylvanian-age fold-thrust belt that runs nearly true east-west, the only such major mountain range between the Appalachians and the Pacific per Oklahoma Geological Survey tectonic mapping. The unusual orientation produces unusual microclimates — north-facing Ouachita slopes hold disjunct populations of New England flora (American beech, sugar maple) that found their southern refugium here during Pleistocene cooling and never retreated.

Broken Bow Lake in the county's Beavers Bend area holds 14,000 acres of clear-water reservoir at the Mountain Fork River impoundment; the tailwater below the dam supports a Department of Wildlife Conservation-stocked rainbow trout fishery that runs year-round (one of three trout-stocked tailwaters in Oklahoma, the only one in the southeastern quarter of the state). Beavers Bend State Park accepts rigs to 45 ft with full hookups across multiple loops totaling 47 RV-friendly sites and is consistently ranked the most-booked Oklahoma state park per Oklahoma Tourism's annual visitation reports — November-March weekends sell out for the Hochatown cabin-tourism economy. The Talimena National Scenic Byway runs 54 miles along the Ouachita Mountain ridgeline from Talihina, OK to Mena, AR, the only USFS-designated scenic byway in Oklahoma and one of two in the Ouachita National Forest. Idabel (county seat, population 6,769) anchors the broader RV-friendly Lower Mountain Fork tourism economy.
