The county in brief
A traveler's read on Edmonson County
Surveyors have been mapping new Mammoth Cave passage continuously since the Cave Research Foundation began the modern systematic effort in 1954 — 426 miles of confirmed passage now per the 2023 NSS inventory, twice the length of the second-longest cave system on Earth (Sistema Sac Actun in Mexico), and longer than the next 6 longest cave systems combined. The Karst Aquifer that drains the entire 53,000-acre national park surface runs as much as 30 sub-surface streams that periodically connect during high-water events; the system is still considered actively expanding. Edmonson County wraps the entire NP surface, the Green River drainage above the Lock & Dam 6 confluence (the lower river is one of two remaining unimpounded big-river segments in Kentucky after the dam closures), and the Houchin Ferry historic crossing — one of two NPS-operated free auto ferries left in the United States, running across the Green at the park's western edge on roughly a 10-minute schedule April-November.
Brownsville (population 805, the county seat) sits on KY-70 at the southern park boundary and is the practical gas/grocery stop, with the next full-service options 25 miles east at Park City or 20 miles south at Bowling Green. The county runs 304 sq mi of mostly forested limestone-and-sandstone topography — Pennyroyal Plateau eroding into knob-and-hollow karst — with very little tillable agriculture and almost no industrial base; tourism and the NPS payroll are the dominant economic levers per Kentucky LMI county profiles. Mammoth Cave Campground accepts rigs up to 30 ft on reservation through recreation.gov; the Maple Springs Group Campground is the only park loop accepting rigs over 30 ft (groups only). The two private RV-friendly options at Cave City (15 miles east, in adjacent Barren County) handle the 30-50 ft length class that the in-park loop can't fit, with full hookups and shuttle access to the Visitor Center.
