The Volcano guide
The first thing renters need to internalize: there is no inter-island car-ferry service in Hawaii, so an RV picked up on Hawaii Island (Big Island) stays on Hawaii Island for the whole rental. Pasha Hawaii hauls vehicles between Honolulu and Hilo on a freight schedule but does not sell point-to-point passenger ferry tickets, so cross-island RV touring is impossible.
Inside the National Park, NPS operates two drive-in campgrounds (Namakanipaio and Kulanaokuaiki) and both publish length limits well below typical mainland Class A dimensions — Namakanipaio is the more RV-friendly of the two with a published 35 ft tent-pad option. The second planning anchor is vog (volcanic fog: SO2 + particulate).
When Kilauea is erupting (the most recent series of summit eruptions began Dec 2020 with intermittent activity through 2026), USGS HVO posts vog advisories that the Hawaii Department of Health treats as actionable air-quality warnings. Asthmatic renters check airnow.gov before setting out. Propane refill on Hawaii Island clusters at Hilo (35 mi northeast) and Kailua-Kona (95 mi west) — Volcano village itself has the General Store but no certified refill. Diesel: Volcano Shell, then Hilo for any serious top-off. Tank-dump infrastructure is thin: NPS dumps inside the park are reservation-tied, and the next legitimate public option is Hilo. Read the NPS Backcountry Office page before any backcountry route — the park is genuinely volcanic and active.
When to come
Best: April-May and September-October — dry-side trades hold, lower mainland visitor density.
Skip: Mid-December through early January (peak holiday visitation) and any active Kilauea summit eruption window with adverse vog drift.

- Check USGS HVO eruption status + airnow.gov vog reading day-of-arrival.
- Stage tank dump at Namakanipaio before any 3-night Chain of Craters Rd loop.
- Verify single-island itinerary — no inter-island ferry for the rental.
- Read Hawaii County Code §15-19 — no village shoulder overnighting.
